Modern double glazing comes with many benefits, like noise reduction, UV-ray protection and property security from multipoint locking mechanisms.

What should you do if your double glazed is showing signs of wear?

1. Excessive Condensation

In the winter, when windows and doors are closed, condensation may form inside the glass panes if the air temperature is warmer than the window's surface. This is a natural occurrence that can be prevented by opening windows, improving ventilation more generally, running a dehumidifier and keeping moisture levels low with extractor fans. However, if condensation forms regularly on the interior of your windows this is a sign that the double glazing has failed and it needs replacing as soon as possible.

In contrast, condensation on the outside of your windows is a normal phenomenon and indicates that your double glazing unit is operating just as it should. Condensation outside your windows during the morning is caused by the temperature of the cold glass dropping below the dewpoint of the surrounding air. This causes the water vapour in the air to be drawn into the window where it condenses. This is made more difficult by plants that produce excessive moisture in your home as well as by high levels humidity.

If condensation forms inside your double glazing it is a far more serious issue. It is an indication that the seal between the two glass panes has broken and allows warm air from your home to find its way in while insulating gas is evaporating. This can cause significant damage to the double glazing and if it is not addressed will greatly impact the cost of energy.

Installing replacement double glazing immediately you notice this type of condensation can drastically decrease the possibility that the issue becomes worse, and save you money in the end. Replacing your double glazing can also be an excellent opportunity to upgrade to energy-efficient A-rated windows which will make your home more comfortable and reducing your energy bills further.

2. Signs of Wear and Tear

Double glazing has many benefits that include the reduction of energy costs and noise. However, as with any other product double glazed windows have a lifespan and it's crucial to be aware of the indications that they are nearing the point of no return.

Visible condensation is one of the most evident indicators. This is because of the different temperature of the two panes. If you notice it then it could be an indication that the window seals have failed.

If the window seal fails then cold air is able to enter your home. This is not just a waste of energy, but can also cause damp and mould and both are costly to fix. Additionally, both damp and mould can be harmful to health as they can create allergens and irritants that could affect the health of your family.

Draughts in your windows are another sign that the sealants have started to wear. This allows outside noise to enter your home, which could be distracting. This can affect your ability to work from home, or how relaxing your home can feel.

In the end, if windows do not open or close easily, it's a sign that they need to be replaced. It can be a safety concern if your windows aren't opening in a crisis situation like an incident involving fire in your home. This is something you should not ignore. A professional window fitter will be able evaluate the condition of your current windows and give suggestions on the best course of action.

3. Draughts

If you've noticed draughts entering your windows, it is usually a sign that seals within your double glazing have failed. Sealant is used to secure the glass panes and provide insulation. However, it could be damaged by weather conditions or simply ageing. This causes cold air to enter your home, and warm air to escape, leading to the draughts to increase and decrease energy efficiency.

Another reason why draughts could be happening is because the frame of your window has become misshapen and is not sealing correctly. This means that moisture may get trapped within the frame, which can also cause draughts and rotting over time. This is a serious issue and you must replace your double glazing as soon as possible.

A misted double glazed window is a clear sign that your sealed unit has sprung a leak or the gas between the panes has escaped. This is a serious problem and you will need to replace it immediately in order to stop water from getting into your home. It will also stop heat from escaping, and will reduce the efficiency of your insulation. If your windows are still covered by warranty, you can request the company to replace them.

Cracks and chips in double glazing aren't always a sign of needing to be replaced, but they may have an impact on the overall performance. They may also limit the amount of light that flows through, which can cause drafts. If your windows have deep cracks or chips, they may not be able to support the weight of Replacement window locks units that will require new window frames.

4. Increased Utility Bills

It's important to keep the cost of energy as low as you can. High energy bills are not only costly however they also place unnecessary strain on the environment. We all want to reduce the impact of this. Leaky windows are the main reason for high energy costs. They not only let heat escape from your home and create drafts that force you to use more energy to heat your home. Energy efficient windows can help you save money as well as reduce your energy costs.

If you notice condensation between double-glazed panes, it's an indication that your windows require to be replaced. This is an indication of a faulty seal, which means air is leaking into and out of the house. Insulation is also not working properly.

If your double glazing is misting, it's time to replace them. This is a clear indication that the seal is broken and water is getting trapped between the glass panes. Double glazing will stop water from entering your home and will stop heat from escape and keep your home warm.

If you have your double-glazed windows replaced with a new energy efficient window you will be able to conserve the heat, cut down on energy use and enhance the appearance of your home. This can also add value to your home, making it more attractive to potential buyers should you decide to sell it in the near future. You can expect to save PS115 in heating expenses each year by using double glazing rated category B. This will pay off the cost of your windows.

5. Faulty Windows

If you have a double glazed window that has become foggy, misty or hazy, this is an early sign that the seal has failed. It's also a sign that the glass has lost its insulation value and could lead to draughts and condensation. In addition, the gap around the edges of your windows can allow water to enter and damage your wall or plaster. This can also be a serious fire risk.

If the glass in your double glazing has become misty, it's important to repair it as soon as you can as it's a safety concern. Additionally, it could be costing you more money in energy bills than necessary because of the loss of insulation.

Moisture in the air between your IGU's (insulated glass units) can cause misted windows. Gas inside the glass, usually argon or krypton helps in insulating. When the seal is damaged, this gas leaks, causing your window to become foggy.

A premature seal failure is a clear sign of a defective product so make sure to verify your warranty for coverage. Some manufacturers offer a prorated guarantee in accordance with the time of the window. This could be something to consider.
