A veterans disability lawsuit could be a solution for many veterans who suffer from disabilities resulting from their military service. The Department of veterans disability law firms Affairs offers benefits to veterans, such as medical treatment and special programs.

According to a lawsuit filed on Monday, Black veterans have disproportionately having a harder time receiving these benefits. The suit was filed on behalf of Conley Monk Jr. by Yale Law School's Veterans Legal Services Clinic.

PTSD

A lawsuit that was filed jointly by Black veterans and Yale law clinics found that the Department of Veterans Affairs denied disability compensation claims made by Black veterans repeatedly over the course of decades. Quil Lawrence of NPR reports that a VA whistleblower revealed to the vets that VA documents revealed that Black veterans were denied benefits at a higher rate than their white counterparts.

The lawsuit was brought by Marine Vietnam veteran Conley Monk and Yale's veterans Disability lawyers Legal Services Clinic. It cites data showing that from 2001 to, the rejection rate for Black disability claims was 29.5 percent, compared with 24.2 percent for white veterans.

The lawsuit seeks compensation for Monk and Black veterans who were wrongfully denied benefits. It also demands the VA to reconsider the thousands of other claims that were incorrectly dismissed. The lawsuit was filed in federal court this week.

Traumatic Brain Injury

Antidepressants, such as selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SNRIs) are beneficial to some sufferers of PTSD. Medications can help control the symptoms and make it easier to get through everyday activities.

A few studies are looking at ways to avoid PTSD. This includes studying whether genes and the brain could influence a person's reaction to a trauma. Others are investigating the ways in which a normal stress response changes into PTSD and how to treat it earlier.
