Which Lightweight Double Pushchair Should You Buy?

A light double pushchair makes it easy to get around, particularly when you have children of various age groups. They are generally easy to steer, fold and transport up and down the stairs.

Side-by-Side

The majority of the lightweight double pushchairs we've test are side-byside models and they're generally best for children that can stand up without assistance because they tend to lack car seat integration. The Thule Urban Glide 2 Double, and Baby Trend Sit 'N Stand Double, are both excellent options. They have recline adjustments for both seats, a big canopy, and padded five-point safety harnesses. They're also easy to maneuver despite their larger footprint, and are ideal for parents who worry about fitting through doors.

The Cybex Duet is a little different due to its unique frame that expands widthways to add an additional seat, making it smaller than most other side-by-side pushchairs on the market. It can be pushed through standard doors and is easy to move around on public transport. It can also be used as a jogger, which is ideal when you are planning to use it in conjunction with an infant car seat or baby carrier.

Another fantastic side-by-side light double is the UPPAbaby Vista v2 Double, which offers even more customization with a modular frame. It features a clever design that lets you transform it into a single stroller or a double by incorporating two car seats or carrycots (it can even accommodate twins). It's a great option for families with growing children and the UPPAbaby makes one of the lightest double Stroller and stylish umbrella strollers available.

If you're looking for a more compact and lightweight double, you can try the egg2 which folds down to the size of a compact suitcase. It can be used as a single or a double with the addition of two carrycots or infant car seats and our home testers loved the sleek and easy it was to use even when loaded with children.

Side-by-side pushchairs that are lightweight aren't foolproof, though -- if your children are of the same age or stage they may still fight over who is allowed to ride in which seat. If they're at different heights, the tandem model could be best for them, as it allows them to face eachother.

Tandem

While side-byside models might be better suited for siblings of the same age, tandem lightweight double pushchairs are a different kind of pushchair with their own appeal. Some can accommodate an extra car seat, while others have Reversible seats. Some even come with an additional carrycot or convertible seat in the middle. They are bigger and easy to get in and out of. However, their baskets tend to be smaller than the ones found on buggies that are single. Many feature larger canopies with windows that peek out and cushioned leg cushions.

The iCandy Peach is another example of a good-value lightweight tandem. The fabrics are a little less luxurious than those of some of our top-rated doubles. But, it looks great and is easy to use. One of the most impressive things about it is its one-handed fold - although it requires practice, Kirstie in our Lab declared it to be "genius". The carrycot can't be folded while it is attached. However, the mechanism to attach and remove the carrycot is easy and quick.

Tandem double pushchairs are light and lightweight. They generally make more precise turns than side-by-side models but they can be more difficult to drive over uneven surfaces and curbs. They are also slower to accelerate and more heavy to move. This can put strain on your back.

A convertible double buggy is an additional option. It starts out as an individual however, you can add adapters to convert it into double. It can have a second seat or carrycot on the front or the kids can sit side-by-side. Some have the option of adding a buggyboard, which helps an older child keep up with younger siblings or brothers.

The seats are comfortable for toddlers and come with good headrests and lumbar support. And there are plenty of options for reclining, with the front seat adjusting to various positions and the rear seat having the option of recline.

This type of buggy has the greatest disadvantage of being wider than doubles that are side-by-side. This makes it difficult to maneuver through doorways and it isn't easy to maneuver between kerbs. The suspension and wheels of these strollers are generally good at coping with pavements. They're also lighter than many side-by-sides and, therefore, you can have plenty of storage. These strollers can be difficult to maneuver through supermarkets with narrow aisles, and they can be difficult to carry a lot. It's a bit easier to turn around even on the smallest of curving paths, but even this can be a challenge. However, they noted that the seats' backs have pockets that are not big enough to accommodate anything more than a smartphone and keys.

This lightweight, high-end side-by-side is available in more than 20 models. It also comes with a second chair and carrycot. Its impressive features include a high-profile handlebar for easier steering and a rear and front suspension to smooth rough terrain; a self-standing compact fold with handy straps for easy schlepping; and seven-inch swivel lock front wheels and back wheels that measure 10 inches with suspension to provide a more comfortable ride. The only downside is that you'll need buy a separate baby carrier or car seat.

This versatile tandem is the most popular of our home testers because it is simple to maneuver and features a large shopping basket that can be accessed from both seats when they are in the parent-facing position. Its surprisingly light weight (about the same as a few single to double pushchair pushchairs) makes it easy to move around. Reversible seats mean you can flip them to face either direction and the clever way it attaches an additional seat or riding board to the rear is praised by many. Parents also loved the fact that it can accommodate infant carriers and car seat from a variety of brands. This includes those that aren't normally compatible with other double buggies.
