If you have GAD, you feel uncontrollable worry and tension about everyday events and situations. Your worries can turn into extreme and unreal even though you know that there is no reason to feel that way.

Psychotherapy, also known as talk therapy can help ease the symptoms of GAD. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is the most effective treatment. Other forms of psychotherapy have also been proven effective in treating anxiety.

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)

Cognitive behavioral therapy is a psychological technique that helps you to change your negative thoughts and feelings. It also teaches you to become your own therapist, and how to challenge negative thinking and behavior. It is a brief treatment that can be used as a stand-alone therapy or in conjunction with other types psychotherapy.

It is based on the notion that thoughts, feelings, and physical sensations all have a connection. Your therapist can help identify and modify negative thoughts that could be causing anxiety and other symptoms. CBT is a method of treatment that involves a goal-oriented method as well as individual education, homework, and practice. Your therapist might request you to fill in questionnaires and forms in order to describe your problem or pinpoint the distressing symptoms. You will also be given printed materials from your therapist to help learn more about the condition you're experiencing and the best way to treat it.

The first step of CBT is to recognize your automatic thoughts that are negative and then learn to break them. Your therapist might suggest a mindfulness exercise to help you concentrate on your present experience and reduce your worrying. This technique is especially helpful for those with a chronic fear of loss and a tendency to predict the most devastating events.

CBT is also about in avoiding maladaptive behavior, and using evidence-based natural methods to treat anxiety to fight it. If you suffer from GAD, for example your therapist may suggest keeping a daily data journal to identify distorted core belief. They could then be replaced with more adaptive assumptions. Your therapist might also employ exposure therapy to help you face your fears. In this course, you will be exposed to things or situations that make your anxious, beginning with ones that are not as threatening. Then, you'll gradually increase your exposure to more difficult situations until your anxiety doesn't rise as high.

Medication

Everyone experiences anxiety every now and then. It's part of life. However, if the anxiety becomes excessive and interferes with daily activities, it's time to seek help. If you or a loved one suffers from generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) treatments include medication and psychotherapy. Generally, the two treatments are paired to produce the best results.

Psychotherapy, also referred to as talk therapy, involves working with a mental health professional to discover and modify negative thoughts, emotions, and behaviors that contribute to your anxiety. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is the most research-backed type of psychotherapy for GAD. It teaches you to challenge your negative thoughts and build new strategies to manage anxiety. It's a short-term treatment, but can also have lasting effects.

The medicines for GAD reduce the levels certain brain chemicals that cause anxiety and worry. Your doctor will help you determine which treatments are appropriate for you. Different types of antidepressants can be used to treat GAD such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs). SSRIs are typically prescribed to treat this condition. Examples include escitalopram duloxetine, and venlafaxine. Antidepressants can cause negative effects, such as dizziness or fatigue, and you may have to try a couple of different medications before settling on the one that works best for you.

Your doctor could prescribe benzodiazepines for anxiety. These drugs are quick-acting but they can also be addictive if taken for a prolonged period of time. They're usually prescribed only when other medications haven't been effective or aren't well tolerated. The side effects of benzodiazepines include dizziness, drowsiness, and nausea.

Psychotherapy

Anxiety and worry are a normal aspect of life, however they can become overwhelming if they persist and cause problems with daily functioning or relationships. Talk to your GP about ways to get help if you or someone you love is suffering from GAD. They can provide treatments that can help improve your symptoms and live an ordinary life. Therapy or medication can be used in treatment.

The most effective treatment for GAD is psychotherapy, also called psychotherapy or talk therapy. It involves working with a therapist to learn coping skills and ways to manage your worries. The goal is to reintegrate into your routine and to do the things that you did before your anxiety took hold. It usually takes several months to see a significant improvement in symptoms.

Antidepressants are often prescribed to treat GAD. They can be found in the selective serotonin-reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) or serotonin and norepinephrine receptor inhibitor (SNRI) classes. Examples of these include escitalopram (Lexapro) duloxetine (Cymbalta), venlafaxine (Effexor XR) and paroxetine (Paxil, Pexeva). These are the first-line treatment options for GAD. Doctors can prescribe buspirone or hydroxyzine for anxiety relief. These aren't as well-studied, so doctors only use them when SSRIs aren't working or can't be tolerated.

Certain people take herbal sedatives such as lavender and valerian to ease anxiety. There isn't a lot of research on these, so they're not advised unless you've tried other medications but not had any success. Some people find that a combination of medication and psychotherapy yields the best results. In these situations, it isn't necessary to stop the medications after your symptoms have been controlled.

Mindfulness meditation

Some people feel anxious for reasons that are legitimate, but most people do not. However, for those suffering from generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), worries are always present. They can make it difficult to complete daily tasks at school or at work and also to connect with family and friends. GAD is a chronic condition however, psychotherapy and medication can aid.

One approach to treatment is mindfulness meditation. Participants in a mindfulness course learn to become aware of their thoughts and feelings, as well as bodily sensations, and not judge them. It takes practice but it can reduce anxiety and stress.

Another approach is cognitive behavior therapy, which focuses on identifying and retraining negative thinking patterns. It teaches relaxation techniques and assists in changing the habits that cause anxiety. CBT is a powerful generalized anxiety treatment, and it's usually coupled with psychotherapy.

In a psychotherapy session, counselors can discuss your family history and your personal experiences. They can utilize this information to find the most effective generalized anxiety treatment for you. Certain people with anxiety disorders manage their symptoms by themselves, using self-help books or relaxation techniques, such as progressive muscle relaxation or autogenic training. These methods haven't been thoroughly studied through scientific research.

Some forms of meditation can help with generalized anxiety disorder. Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction, as an example, is a method of teaching patients to recognize their negative, irrational thoughts and redirect them. It also encourages patients to pay attention to their physical sensations, which may relax the nervous system. Some research shows that MBSR is effective in treating GAD. The advantages of MBSR treatment are likely to diminish with time. Another form of meditation that could help ease anxiety is the use of hypnosis. In a series of sessions, a practitioner watches your brain-wave patterns on an electroencephalograph and guides you to achieve a more relaxed state at will.
