How to Replace Window Panes

A damaged or cracked window is an inconvenience. It could also be an opportunity to upgrade your glass to energy efficient or insulated windows to benefit from greater comfort, a higher the value of resales and lower utility bills.

It's a task you can tackle yourself at a fraction of the cost of hiring a professional. It requires the right tools and only an hour or two of your time.

Glass

If your single-pane windows are old damaged, cracked or deteriorating replacing them with modern glass that is tempered or insulated will increase energy efficiency and decrease noise while maintaining the historical integrity of older homes. The process of replacing the window pane is simple and can be done by most homeowners who possess basic hand tools. You will also require a replacement double glazed window window pane, glazier's suggestions, pliers, and latex glaze putty. If you need to you may use a heatgun to warm the old putty. Before starting, wear gloves and safety glasses as working with broken glass could cause injuries.

Begin by removing any broken pieces of glass. This is best done using the help of pliers however, a flathead screwdriver can also be used in the pinch. Use a wood chisel, or putty knives, to take away any old putty that remains around the frame and window sash. Be careful and slow making sure not to break the current window sash. It is best to do this using a sturdy ladder instead of the ground and to place someone on the sash to help keep it in place.

Prepare the window frame to accommodate the new pane once you have removed the old putty. Measure the width and height of the opening in the sash, subtracting 1/8 inch from each measurement (to allow for seasonal expansion and contraction). These measurements can be sent to a home center or hardware store to get an item cut from stock glass to the right size. Alternately, you can cut the glass yourself, if you have the tools you need.

After putting in the new glass Apply caulking on the edges. This will make the glass weatherproof. Then, place a glazier's tip on the frame's opposite side to hold the pane in the right place. The points shouldn't be too tight that they cause friction between the frame and the sash However, they should not be loose.

Before applying the putty to the surface, you must knead it thoroughly until it is soft and free from lumps. Then you can roll it into pencil-sized strips. The first strip should be glued to the frame's corner. Work from one corner to the next, making sure it is even and smooth.

Glazier's Points

The glazier's points are the small triangular pieces that allow glass to be secured into frames for windows without scratching or damaging the fragile surface. It's easy to learn how to use this nefarious tool and you can save money on the expense of a professional installation.

After the old putty as well as glazier's points are removed Clean the frame thoroughly with a utility knife to remove any remaining traces. If necessary it is necessary to lightly sand the wood along the grooves of the rabbets to smooth rough areas. If you decide to sand wood, protect it with painter's tape to prevent accidental damage.

Write down the dimensions of the frame. These measurements can be taken to the hardware or home center store and the new pane will be cut to a smaller size. This will ensure that the pane fits comfortably and allows for expansion and contraction.

Glass-Replacement-150x150.jpgPlace the new pane in the frame and push it in with your hands. Then, use the tip of your chisel or the back of the putty knife to make a tap on the glazier's facets, as shown in Figure 11. When you're done taping, they should be flush with the top edge of the pane. the shoulders of the points should be below the rabbet's lip. groove.

Apply a thin bead of glazing compound on the edges of the glass that has been made and into the rabbet grooves, to seal and protect them. Let it dry completely and cure.

Once the glazing compound has dried it's time to put in the new window sash. First, saturate the wood with a heavy coat of linseed oil. This will stop the new putty from taking up moisture and drying out and cracking over time. Apply this coat using a brush or the tip of your putty knife, and then employ the chisel or back end of the putty knife to gently hammer in the new sash and glazier's points into the rabbet grooves. Repeat this process every 10 inches around the perimeter of the frame.

Putty

A baseball thrown at you, an errant rock or falling branch could cause a window to crack or break. Fortunately, windows can be easily replaced by simply putting a new piece in place. The glass is held in place using small clips made of metal called the glazier's pointed and putty, often called glazing compound. Before you install a new pane, first get rid of the old one and clean up the area with an abrasive and an abrasive scraper that is a pull type or a wood chisel. Wear safety glasses and gloves when you work. You'll need a heat gun in the event that the window is glued into the frame.

If you plan to reinstall the original sash in the future, take care to remove any pieces of molding that are used to secure the old pane. Sand the sash until it's flat and ready to receive new caulk. After the sash has been re-installed and sanded, apply a fresh silicone caulk to the glass to ensure it will not leak or change color over time.

Remove the glazing points from the rabbets, or the grooves in the sash, where the glass is. If they're hard to chisel out, try holding the hand tool, such as a heat gun over them to soften them before you do. If you're using a heating gun, be cautious not to damage the railings or sash by placing the tool too closely.

Once the old glaze points and putty have been removed, make a bed for the new pane. Roll a rope with glazing compound between your fingers and then make it about 1/2 inch thick. Then, you can press it into the rabbets in which the glass will rest. The glass should rest against the putty on both sides. If necessary gently tap your glass into the rabbet using your thumb.

If the new pane has cracked, you can use a silicone caulk or glass glue based on solvents to fill in the crack prior to pressing it in the sash. If the crack is not sealed, you'll need to apply putty to keep water out. After the putty has dried, wipe the oily film from the Glass Replacement For Windows and allow it to dry completely before you paint. Paint after the putty has completely dried. It will not make a strong seal and may be leaking or discoloring over time.

Paint

If you've experienced a broken window pane, then you may be worried about the cost of a new one. It's true that replacing a single pane of glass doesn't have to be costly when you do it on your own. In fact windows with double panes can be replaced at a fraction of the cost of an expert.

If you're working with a large glass window, first make sure it is securely fixed to the frame. This job can be made relatively simple and fast using the proper tools and techniques.

If you're ready to begin taking off the old window by removing the glazing points made of metal that are connected to it. They are basically tiny metal triangles that function as "nails" that keep the window in in the wood frame. They are buried beneath a bead or glazing putty which hardens into an unbreakable wedge which holds the wood frame firmly in position and hides the sharp edges.

After taking off the old pane clean the frame and wood. Scrape off any paint that has been used and sand the rabbet grooves in which the glazing points were placed. Sand them down to clean wood surfaces, so that you can paint the frames the same color. After sanding the wood then apply a layer of flax oil. This will help to extend its life.

Then, you need to measure the width of the window's opening. It is necessary to take vertical and horizontal measurements of the entire opening, and also the thickness of the old pane. To determine the exact size of the new pane, subtract 1/8 inch from both measurements. This will also allow for expansion and contraction of the glass during seasons of changes. Take these dimensions to your local hardware or home improvement store, and they will have cut the glass for you.

Now, it's time to bed the new window pane. To do this, place the pane inside the frame and move it around until a 1/16 inch of putty remains between the edge of the glass and the sash on all four sides. Use a putty knife to smear the putty evenly, making sure that there isn't an excessive amount of excess putty in the corners and along the edges. When the putty dries, it can be painted with the same color as the frame to prevent water and air from leaking into the frame and causing fogging.
