Speedy wideouts are the biggest beneficiaries of moving into the slot, because they generally are more likely to be open downfield when their route isn't covered by a cornerback or linebacker. The only wide receiver who isn't speedy on the list who can benefit from slot work is Corey Coleman, as he's an extremely reliable target on short and intermediate routes.

Jerry Jeudy, KJ Hamler and other possession-based receivers are at the lowest of the list. They are better in short and intermediate routes rather than deep areas. Jeudy is a great option to be a sleeper for this season, as the Rams' primary slot receiver for the Rams while Courtland Sutton and Amari Cooper are largely expected to be involved in more downfield targets. Hamler, meanwhile, should excel on shorter-to-mid and intermediate routes, because it was where he excelled when playing for the Bills in 2021. He could be an excellent replacement for the departing wideout Jordan Matthews.

Percentage of Snaps In Slot

The percentage of snaps a receiver plays in the slot is a good indicator of their ability to play deep routes. However, it isn't always a reliable indicator of a receiver's skill set since some receivers excel in the slot, but can't play deep and vice versa.

Alshon Jeffrey, for instance, leads the league in targets received per game (4.8) However, he's only ranked 6th when it comes to the slot that receives scores (58.5). This is due to the fact that the majority of his targets are from outside, and it's a challenge to get a first down when playing an open, deep route.

On the other hand, certain receivers excel in playing inside, but struggle on the perimeter. For example the Panthers gave Robby Anderson 978 snaps last season, and he ran a whopping 74% of his slot routes as opposed to just 26% for boundary routes. This is a significant difference and illustrates how much more efficient the player is when positioned in the slot.

Chris Godwin, a Buccaneers player, is inside most of the time on his passes and is among the top five slot receiving scores (58.5). However, he also played 51 percent of his perimeter routes last season, and is a star in one-on-one coverage.

Speed receivers are more efficient when they line up inside, as they are able to get targeted down the field, and often find themselves with one-on-one coverage. There are names like Mike Evans, Amari Cooper and Julio Jones in our top five.

On the other hand there are some excellent slot cornerbacks like McDuffie and Moore in this group. Both have been able to generate pressures in the passing game with McDuffie leading the NFL with seven forced fumbles and Moore having the best tackle stop rate on this list (-3.5). Spagnuolo maximized McDuffie's skills by putting him in the slot for nickel and dime packages, and then shifting him to the outside when playing base defense. Additionally, Moore's ability to stop big run plays has been a huge advantage when playing in the slot.

Percentage of Snaps Outside

While the NFL's top receivers like Baldwin, Golden Tate and Larry Fitzgerald excel on the perimeter, it's worth noting that their slot counterparts are also excellent. Wide receivers who have high slot grades score touchdowns about the same as those on the perimeter. This is due to the fact that quarterbacks have a more stable target distribution when throwing to slot and outside receivers than to other inside options like tight ends and backfield pass-catchers.

It's therefore interesting to see a player such as CeeDee lamb on this list for 2022. He plays the slot in three WR sets and flanker in two of the sets. In fact the slot receiver is running a higher number of routes in the slot than the majority of players on this chart. This is an excellent opportunity to create matchup benefits for your team. It also helps to explain why Lamb is the highest-rated slot receiver in our system this season.

Lamb also plays at the X-position and makes big plays from outside. Lamb isn't as powerful as the other players in this ranking but he's highly skilled and is a perfect match for the Cowboys scheme.

Mecole Hardman, a different player who can put huge numbers on targets of both kinds is another example. He is one of the top players in the league when it comes to throwing throws from behind his shoulders. He's also a superb contested-catch player.

Another player on this list that's an authentic slot specialist is Baltimore's Jalen Hilton, who has lined up in the slot on 85.7 percent of his defensive snaps this season. He has the third-lowest EPA for targets, and the fifth-highest EPA for run stops among cornerbacks in the slot. This makes him an important member of his team's defensive line. On the contrary, he's been unable to block passes from the outside and has been able to give an unfavorable EPA against these types of targets. This is because he's been playing with linebackers and safety players who aren't able to compete with Hilton's speed, size, and ability to run routes.
