UPVC window handles come in a variety of styles, but they all have the same locking mechanism. To replace a uPVC window handle, you must remove the top screw located at the base of the handle. This will reveal two screws.

Inline Espagnolette Handles
Most double-glazed windows have Espagnolette handles which operate multi-point locks for improved security. They work by using a 7mm square spindle from the back of the handle that connects with a gearbox on the inside of the window frame that moves multi-locks as it is turned. They are available in a range of styles, including cockspur inline, key, and cockspur locking handles.
Our uPVC replacement handle kits are designed to make it simple to replace a damaged or broken espagnolette window handle. These uPVC handle sets are packaged with a selection of spindle lengths suitable for the majority of applications. They come with all the fixing screws required for installation included. They are also available with key plugs, which enable them to be converted from standard open/close to the egress and fire escape locking handles (if utilized in conjunction with the appropriate key plug).
If you are just looking for an espagnolette handle that can simply replace your existing window handles without changing the position of the mushroom plates, we recommend our Simplefit Inline Espag Handle with 3 Spindles. These handles are designed specifically for this purpose and they come ready to fit with a range of spindle lengths already inserted so you don't need to worry about cutting them down on site. The handles are also a good choice for new build or refurbishment projects due to their excellent value and easy installation.
Another option is our Yale Sparta 2 Inline Espag Handle that was designed to be minimally intrusive with a reduced base height. It is part of our suited range of hardware. It is available in a variety of finishes that all comply with the specifications of BS EN 1670:2007 Grade 5 corrosion resistance. They have also been tested for durability and are suitable for use in coastal environments and with acidic timbers. They can be used with cylinder-immobiliser inserts for key-locking when needed.
Cockspur Handles
Commonly seen typically on older uPVC and aluminium windows cockspur handles are a simple catch and latch arrangement. The handle nose closes onto or into the catch which is a plastic wedge block that is affixed to the frame of the window. As the wedges are available in different sizes, it is important that you know what step height you need to buy prior to purchasing the new handle. Typically, uPVC frames have a handle step of 9mm. aluminium frames tend to use 21mm as the step size.
The cockspur handle can be locked with a key, providing security to your home. The lock is installed into the handle by using an appropriate spindle that fits in the hole in the handle (also called a backset). The spindle has a 7mm square cross-section and can be used to open or shut the window.
It is crucial to ensure that the new cockspur handle has the same height of the original. Usually, this is measured from the base of the spur on the handle to the underside of the nose of the handle. This measurement is often known as the backset or stack height, and it is vital that you have this information prior to purchasing a handle.
Cockspur handles are available in straight/universal, cranked, left- or right-handed versions. This allows the handles to be positioned on windows that open to the left or right, and to give the user a better access to the window.
It is crucial to determine whether or not your window is required to have a restrictor that is designed to stop the handle being extended beyond a certain amount. Generally speaking, they are required for high-rise commercial buildings or flats due to security reasons. The majority of homes do not require these.
There are a variety of styles and colors of cockspur handles, including white uPVC and brushed stainless steel. The best cockspur handle for your windows depends on your personal style and taste as well as how you want the window to work.
Tilt and Turn Handles
Tilt and turn handles are a popular style of handle which is typically seen on double glazed windows in the UK. They are found on both upvc and timber windows. The handle can be turned at any angle, even 180 degrees. This allows the window to be opened fully into the room and be lowered to allow for ventilation. The handle is locked in this position, which requires an unlocking key to open the handle if required to open it.
This type of handle is able to be replaced, as it has only one large handle, not a number of smaller ones. This reduces the overall look of the handle and is more in keeping with the modern minimalistic design trends. Additionally, they are much easier to clean than casement windows, as the window opens inwards and can be cleaned on both sides.
They are also 4 to 8 times stronger than casement window. This makes them ideal for larger windows and doors. The frames are also made of steel, which adds strength and durability.
The tilt and turn mechanism is also safer than that of casement windows, since the handle can be locked at any angle. This is especially crucial in areas where children are present, as it prevents children from opening the window.
Tilt and turn windows are a favorite option for a lot of houses, since they can be utilized in a variety of ways. They can be opened horizontally like a normal window, or lowered to the style of a hopper. This is an excellent option for those looking to improve airflow in their homes and can also aid in noise reduction. Glass is easily removed making them easy to clean and maintain. These windows are available in a variety of sizes and colours. They are a great addition to any home and will complement both modern and traditional styles.
Crank Handles
Crank handles require only a little effort to open and permit a stunning view of the outdoors without blocking the glass replacement window. They are commonly used in casement windows, that hinge on the sides or awning windows. They have the same mechanism as windows, with a linkage arm that supports the window sash which opens or closes by cranking the handle in a clockwise direction. The crank window's mechanism unlike other handles is often subjected much wear and tear. This could cause the handle and gears to break or fall off the shaft that controls the operator. Monitoring the handle and the mechanism of the operator regularly will ensure that they remain in good shape for many years to come.
A crank handle is made up of a shaft made of metal that rotates perpendicularly, and is attached to an arm. The arm is turned in a circular direction by grabbing it and turning it, similar to how you operate a sharpener. In certain instances, the handle can be operated by the leg.
The base of the crank handle is hollow. It's this hole that allows it to connect to equipment and machinery. The handle's arm also has a connecting rod, which converts the circular motion the handle into rotary or reciprocating motion, which is used to operate machines and equipment.
In addition to adjusting machinery and equipment Crank handles are often employed on boats to assist them be loaded onto trailers. They are typically made from stainless steel which is resistant against corrosion in marine environments. The majority of boat crank handles have been powder coated to protect against damage and make them easier to clean.
Replace the crank handle in the event that it stops working or does not open the window. Before doing this you should look for the trim mounting screws within the window frame's track for screen. If there are none to be found, you can use a stiff putty blade to loosen the cover by sliding it between window jambs and the frame. If this doesn't work, you can remove it and access the crank by unscrewing screws inside the window frame.
