Speedy wideouts are among the biggest benefits of moving into the slot, since they have an easier time getting open downfield in the event that their route isn't blocked by a linebacker or cornerback. Corey Coleman is the only wide receiver who isn't a speedy wideout but would benefit from more slot work. He's a solid player for intermediate and short routes.

The bottom of the list includes more possession-based receivers who are better on intermediate and short routes than those in deep areas such as Jerry Jeudy and KJ Hamler. Jeudy is a good option to be a sleeper for this season as he'll be the primary slot receiver for the Rams while Courtland Sutton and Amari Cooper are expected to play on more downfield targets. Hamler is expected to excel on shorter-to-mid and intermediate routes, since this is where he was at his best when playing for the Bills in 2021. Hamler could be a fantastic replacement for the former wideout Jordan Matthews.

Percentage of Snaps In Slot

The proportion of snaps a receiver plays in the slot is a good indicator of their ability to play deep routes. However, it's not always a reliable indicator of a receiver's skills as certain receivers excel in the slot, but aren't able to play deep and vice versa.

Alshon Jeffrey, for example, leads the league in targets received per game (4.8) however, he is only ranked 6th in slot receiving scores (58.5). This is because most of his targets have come from the outside and it's hard to get a first down on a wide-open, deep route in that setting.

On the other hand, certain receivers excel in playing inside and aren't able to do much on the perimeter. Robby Anderson, for instance was given 978 snaps by the Panthers this season. He ran 74% of his route in the slot, compared to only 26% on boundary routes. This is a significant difference and indicates how much more efficient Robby Anderson is when he's aligned in the slot.

Chris Godwin, a Buccaneers player, plays in the middle of the field most of his passing downs. He is among the top five slot receiving scores (58.5). However, he also played 51% of his perimeter routes last season, and is a star in one-on-one coverage.

Speed receivers are typically more effective when lining up inside, since they are able to be targeted down the field and often find themselves with one-on-one coverage. This is why you'll see names like Julio Jones, Mike Evans, and Amari Cooper in the top five of our list.

On the other hand there are some excellent slot cornerbacks like McDuffie and Moore in this group. McDuffie is the top player in the NFL in forced fumbles having seven, while Moore has the highest tackle-stop performance (-3.5) on this list. Spagnuolo increased McDuffie's capabilities by using his slot for nickel and dime packs and then shifting him to the outside for base defense. Moore's ability to stop big run plays is an enormous benefit when playing the slot.

Percentage of Snaps Outside

While the NFL's top receivers like Baldwin, Golden Tate and Larry Fitzgerald excel on the perimeter, it's important to note that their slot counterparts are also excellent. Wide receivers who have an excellent slot grade have touchdowns that are about the same as those on the outside. This is mostly because quarterbacks have a more stable target distribution when throwing to slot and outside receivers, compared to other inside options, such as tight ends and backfield pass-catchers.

It's interesting to see a player such as CeeDee lamb on this list for 2022. He plays the slot in three WR sets and flanker in two of them. Lamb is running more routes in the slot than most of the players listed on this chart. This is an excellent method to gain matchup advantages for your team. It also helps to explain why Lamb is the most highly-rated receiver in our system.

He also plays the X-position and makes big plays from outside. Lamb isn't as fast as some of the other players in this list, but he's a high-graded wide receiver who fits well into the Cowboys scheme.

Mecole Hardman is a further example of a player who's capable of posting big numbers on both kinds of targets. He's among the best players in the league at taking throws from behind his shoulders. He's also a fantastic player who can play contested catch.

Jalen Hilton is another player who is a slot specialist. He's been positioned in this position on 85.7 percent of his defensive plays thus far in the season. He has the third-lowest EPA for targets, and the fifth-highest EPA for run stops among cornerbacks in the slot. This makes him a valuable member of his team's defensive unit. On the other hand, he's struggled to prevent passes from the outside and has allowed a negative EPA against these kinds of targets. This is a result of playing with unsafe linebackers who aren't able to match Hilton's size, speed and route-running ability.
