Volvo Key Fob Troubleshooting

Volvo drivers are enthralled by the remote control features of their key fob. With a smartphone app they can lock and unlock the vehicle or start the engine and even locate it.

First, place the fob of the key on a clean work surface with the logo side facing upwards. Find the button that releases it, insert a coin between the cover and the fob and then pull it up with care.

Unlocking the Door

Volvo's remote keyfobs unlock your vehicle's doors, tailgate and flap for filling up with fuel at the push of the button. They can also turn on the ignition, set the alarm, and operate your sunroof, if it's equipped. With these features you won't have to search for your keys or even lock yourself out of your car again.

Keep your key fob in place with the Volvo logo facing upwards, and unlock or lock the manual lock. Find the black button that is on the outside of the body of your key fob and press it gently to open a cover which conceals a manual key blade. You will need a flathead screwdriver or coin to flip this cover counterclockwise so that the arrow is aligned with "open."

The Engine is Ready to Start

Modern Volvo key fobs offer a level convenience and functionality that is unmatched by manual keys. A key fob, just like any other battery-operated device, can lose its charge over time. If you notice that your key fob has become less responsive when you hit the lock or unlock button, it might be time to replace the battery.

If your vehicle comes with a dealer-installed Engine Remote Start accessory, you can also use the key fob to activate this feature. The vehicle will heat or cool at the same temperature that it was set to when it was parked and it can run for up to 15 minutes.

Remove the cover that covers the back of the key fob by using your fingernail. The button should be under the cover at an angle that is near the edge of the body. Slide it down and to the right. The cover will fall free and slide away leaving the manual key blade inside! If you are still unable to locate the button, search around the newly exposed manual key access to determine whether there's a hidden slot or lever.

Close the Windows

One of the hidden features that is not visible on Volvo key fobs is that they allow you to open all windows at once by using them. This is a fantastic feature to have when trying to squeeze into a cramped parking space, or just to get fresh air in the cabin while driving.

To unlock the windows, press and hold the unlock button on your Volvo remote for four seconds. This will lower all of the windows, and the sunroof in case your car has one. When you're done driving you can shut everything by pressing the lock button a second time for four seconds.

You can also use your key fob to turn on your car's panic alarm. It will sound a loud, attention-grabbing blare that can scare off thieves and allow you to return home in peace after a night out. This feature is useful should you reside in a hazardous area or wish to ensure the safety of your family when you are away from home.

Opening the Tailgate

Volvo's key fob is packed with many useful features. They are great if you're overwhelmed with shopping, or helping your children take their sports gear home after a workout.

If you have the Hands Free Liftgate with Logo Projection and Programmable Height (if equipped) then you can open it using the key fob. Simply press the button to open it, then use the same button to close it once you're done.

When you're ready to start your vehicle, use the key fob to press the START button (and don't be concerned about the battery dying or your car not starting since it has a backup mechanical key slot as well). This is just one of the many helpful tricks for your new Volvo.

Turning off the Alarm

Modern key fobs provide an array of benefits over a regular mechanical car key. However, they don't work flawlessly forever, and their batteries eventually go out of service. If you're in a hurry or do not want to visit a store to have your key fob reprogrammed, you can try to achieve it at home.

Set out your key fobs, batteries, and extra keys on a clean surface. Locate the small black button located at the lower left corner of the key fob, and move it to the right. The cover should come loose and fall off and reveal the mechanical key blade underneath it.

The key fob's unlock button twice quickly, and you'll be able open all of the doors and the tailgate. The lock button also shuts the sunroof and windows (if fitted) by pressing it for 2 seconds. Connect the battery, and the alarm should stop. If it doesn't work, the owner's manual should contain a procedure to reset the alarm.
